District of St. Andrews, Edinburgh, Scotland on 8th November 1881 to

John Thomson and Anne Thomson (nee Youngson).

PATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 1

 

Paternal Great Grandparents of Jean Harris (nee Thomson)

 

Her father John’s ancestors can be traced back to his grandparents (being Jean’s paternal great grandparents) John Thomson (P1) and Jane Moir (P1). 

 

Their dates and places of birth, marriage and death have not yet been traced.

 

They were probably married about 1800 in the Parish of Inverkeillor, Forfarshire (which later became the County of Angus).

 

They had two known children, Jean Thomson (P2), born about 1804, and David Thomson (P2), born about 1813, both of whom were born in the Parish of Inverkeillor, Forfarshire. Documentation recording their births has not been traced.

 

PATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 2

 

Children of Paternal Great Grandparents of Jean Harris (nee Thomson)

 

(Child 1 of 2) Jean Thomson (P2)

(the great aunt of Jean Harris).

She was married to a male called (William?) Smith (P2), who was probably a Grocer and who possibly died on 1st July 1864 in Auchinblae, Parish of Fordoun, Kincardineshire (both items not yet proved).

Documentation relative to their marriage has not yet been proved.

 

It is not known where Jean Thomson and her husband resided prior to 3rd April1871 but sometime between 7th April 1861 and 3rd April 1871 she went to live with her

brother David, as his housekeeper, at 50 Inverury Street in the Village of Auchinblae, Parish of Fordoun, Kincardineshire (Notes 3 and 4) (probably indicating that her husband had died by that time). Jean still lived with her brother on 4th April 1881.

 

It is not known, at present, when or where Jean died but it was possibly between 1881 and 1891. It is not known whether she had any children although it seems unlikely.

 

Paternal Grandparents of Jean Harris (nee Thomson)   

 

(Child 2 of 2) David Thomson (P2)

(the grandfather of Jean Harris)

He was married to Mary Ferguson (P2), who was born in Logie Pert, Forfarshire (Note 5) about 28th June 1812. Mary’s parents were William Ferguson and Helen Stewart.

 

David and Mary were married at the Village of Logie Pert, Forfarshire on 10th December 1842.

 

Mary died at Craigo Works, Logie Pert, Forfarshire (Note 5) on 31st October 1858 and is buried in the Churchyard at Marykirk, Logie Pert, Forfarshire (now Angus).     

 

David died at 15 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh on 21st January 1888.

Paternal Grandfather of Jean Harris (nee Thomson) 

 

David Thomson (P2)

David (Child 2 of 2 above) lived at Craigo Works, Logie Pert, Forfarshire on 13th October 1843, 13th June 1845, 2nd May 1850 and 30th March 1851 at which later time he was referred to as a Linen Yarn Bleacher. David was referred to as a Bleachfield Labourer on the Death Certificate of his wife Mary on 31st October 1858.

 

He was referred to as a Grocer living at Barnside of Balmullo, Parish of Dun, County of Fife on 7th April 1861 and was a widower at that time .His housekeeper Ann Ferries resided with him at that time.

He was also referred to as a Grocer, residing at the Village of Auchinblae, Parish of Fordoun, Kincardineshire on 2nd April 1871. His sister Jean Smith (nee Thomson) (P2), who was his housekeeper, resided with him.

He was referred to as a Grocer (Master) on 20th June 1873, as a General Merchant on 28th June 1875 and as a Merchant on 4th April 1881, on all three dates residing at the Village of Auchinblae, Parish of Fordoun, Kincardineshire. His sister Jean (aka Jane) was still residing with him as his housekeeper on 4th April 1881.

 

He died on 21st January 1888 at 15 Cumberland Street, St Andrew, Edinburgh.

 

Paternal Grandmother of Jean Harris (nee Thomson)

 

Mary Ferguson (P2)

Mary Ferguson was born in Logie Pert (Note 5), Forfarshire about 28th June 1812.

 

Her residences prior to her marriage on 10th December 1842 have not yet been established but are likely to have been in or near of Logie Pert, Forfarshire.

From 10th December 1842 until her death on 31st October 1858 she resided at Craigo Works, Logie Pert, Forfarshire. She is buried in the Churchyard at Marykirk, Logie Pert, Forfarshire.

 

PATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 3

 

Children of Jean Harris’ Paternal Grandparents David Thomson and Mary Ferguson.

That is, John, the father of Jean Harris (nee Thomson) and his brothers and sisters 

(Jean Harris’ uncles and aunts)

 

Three children are known, as follows:

 

Child No. 1 of 3 - David Thomson (P3)

Born 13th October 1843 at Craigo Works Logie Pert, Angus.

 

He still resided there on 31st March 1851 at which time he was a Scholar.

On 7th April 1861 he was a boarder (lodger) residing at Boat Row, Logie Pert, Angus and was referred to as a Linen Bleacher.

On 2nd April 1871 he was unemployed and residing at the Village of Auchinblae, Fordoun, Kincardineshire.

 

He died at Railway Cottages, Dun, Forfarshire on 28th June 1875 at which time he

was a Railway Porter. He was unmarried.

 

 Child No. 3 of 3 - Ann Thomson (P3)

Born 2nd May 1850 at Craigo Works, Logie Pert, Angus.

 

She still resided there on 31st March 1851.

She was not located on the Census for 1861 (7th April 1861), which may indicate that she was in service or employment away from home at that time.

On 2nd April 1871 she was resident in the Village of Auchinblae, Fordoun, Kincardineshire at which time she was referred to as a Worker at a Flax Mill. She was unmarried at that time.

 

The date and place of her death have not yet been found.

It is believed that she was unmarried and had no children.

 

And

 

Child No. 2 of 3 - John Thomson (P3)

(the Father of Jean Harris (nee Thomson)).

 

Born 13th June 1845 at Craigo Works, Logie Pert, Angus

 

On 31st March 1851 he was still residing at Craigo Works, Logie Pert, Angus at which time he was referred to as a Scholar, probably at Craigo School.

 

On 7th April 1861 he may have been a Cattleman (Servant) residing at Mill Road, Logie Pert, Angus  (but this has not been absolutely confirmed).

 

He was not located on the 1871 Census (2nd April 1871).

 

On 20th June 1873, he married Anne Youngson (P3) at 26 Blackfriars Street, St Nicholas, Aberdeen at which time he as referred to as a Railway Pointsman, residing at 10 Prospect Terrace, Aberdeen. They were married according to the Forms of the Original Secession Church.

 

On 10th April 1874 he was referred to as a Railway Pointsman for the Caledonian Railway, residing at 9 Bank Street, Ferryhill, Aberdeen.

On 25th September 1875 he was referred to as a Railway Signalman, residing at 76 Holborn Street, Aberdeen.

On 29th July 1877 he was referred to as a Furniture Warehouseman, residing at 121 Rose Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

On various dates between 23rd September 1879 and 8th November 1881 he was variously referred to as an Upholsterer’s Porter, a Furniture Warehouseman and a Furniture Packer, residing at 9 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

On various dates between 29th April 1883 and 3rd April 1886 he was referred to as a Furniture Packer, residing at 15 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

On 5th April 1891 and 28th April 1891 he was referred to as a Furniture Packer, residing at 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

On 31st March 1901 he was referred to as a Packer or Warehouseman, residing at 41 Comely Bank Avenue, St Bernards, Edinburgh.

 

 

 

 

 

 

He travelled to the United States with his wife Annie (born Anne) and his daughter Joanna (P4) (aka Joey) on the Anchor Line ship SS California sailing to New York, USA from Glasgow, Scotland on 28th May 1910, with an ultimate destination of his son Alexander at 414 West 60th Street, Chicago, Illinois, USA, presumably to attend the marriage of his daughter Jean (aka Jane) to Paul Harris on 2nd July 1910. He is described as a Warehouseman on the Ship’s Passenger Manifest.

 

Paul and Jean Harris acquired their home at 10856 Longwood Drive, Morgan Park, Beverly Hills District of Chicago, USA, in 1912. Jean’s father, mother, brother James and sister Joanna lived only five blocks away from Jean and Paul.

 

John returned to Scotland where he died on 26th April 1938 at The Manse, Annbank, Tarbolton, Ayrshire, which was the home of his son John Youngson Thomson.

 

 

The Mother of Jean Harris (nee Thomson)

 

was

 

Anne Youngson (P3)

Born 18th May 1851.in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire.       

 

Referred to as a Scholar residing at 48 Skene Square, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 7th April 1861.

 

On 2nd April 1871 she was probably residing at 167 Union Street, Holborn, Old Machar, Aberdeen, where she was referred to as a Parlour Maid. This was a large house with seven servants.

 

Referred to as a Domestic Servant residing at 26 Blackfriars Street, District of St Nicholas, Aberdeen on 20th June 1873.

 

She married John Thomson (P3) at that address on the same day. They were married according to the Rites of the Original Secession Church.

 

After that time she resided with her husband John Thomson at various addresses as shown under John Thomson above and also travelled with him to USA on 28th May 1910 where she also resided with him.

 

She returned to Scotland and died on 28th February 1944 at The Old Manse, Annbank, Tarbolton, Ayrshire, the home of her son John Youngson Thomson.

 

 

PATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 4 (Section 1)

(Jean Harris (nee Thomson) and her brothers and sisters)

 

There were eight children of John Thomson and Anne Youngson (Parents of Jean Harris (nee Thomson) as follows:

 

 

 

 

(1 of 8) Ann Moir Thomson (M4/P4)

Born 10th April 1874 at 9 Bank Street, Ferryhill, Aberdeen.

 

On 4th April 1881 she was referred to as a Scholar, residing at 9 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

On 5th April 1891 she was referred to as a Dressmaker, residing at 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

On 31st March 1901 she was referred to as a Dressmaker residing at 44 Comely Bank Avenue, St Bernards, Edinburgh.

 

She travelled to Canada at the same time as her brother James Hay Thomson on the Allan Line Royal Steamers and State Line ship SS Corinthian bound for Montreal, Canada. They sailed from Glasgow, Scotland on 27th October 1906. Her destination is listed on the Ship’s Passenger Manifest as Montreal, Canada. No occupation is stated on the Manifest.

 

She probably died in either Canada or USA. It is likely that she was unmarried.

 

(2 of 8) David Thomson (M4/P4)

Born 25th September 1875 at 76 Holborn Street, Old Machar, Aberdeen

Died of scarletina (scarlet fever) on 6th November 1880 at 9 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh

 

(3 of 8) John Youngson Thomson (M4/P4)

Born 29th July 1877 at 121 Rose Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh

On 4th April 1881 he resided at 9 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

 

His early schooling was at Canonmills Primary School, Rodney Street, Edinburgh, Midlothian.

 

On 20th September 1887 he resided at 15 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

He attended James Gillespies School, Gillespie Crescent, Edinburgh from 20th September 1887 until 11th July 1890. This was a fee-paying school for boys and girls and was managed by Edinburgh School Board.

 

It is interesting to note that the eminent authoress Dame Muriel Spark later attended James Gillespies High School for Girls. In her most famous novel “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie”, she used the School as the model for the Marcia Blaine School of the novel and one of the teachers Miss Christina Kay was the inspiration for Miss Jean Brodie. Dame Muriel died in April 2006.

 

On 5th April 1891 John was referred to as an Apprentice Clothier, resident at 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

 

On 31st March 1901 he was referred to as a Law Clerk, resident at 41 Comely Bank Avenue, St Bernards, Edinburgh.

He was further educated at the University of Edinburgh and qualified as a Solicitor in October 1905.

 

 

 

He travelled to Canada at the same time as his brother Alexander Thomson on the Allan Line Steamship Co’ ship SS Grampian bound for Montreal, Canada. They sailed from Glasgow, Scotland on 17th September 1909. His destination is listed on the Ship’s Passenger Manifest as Montreal, Canada. His occupation is shown thereon

as a Solicitor.

 

He moved to Chicago, USA and studied at McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, USA, from 1910 to 1913.

He was Licensed by The Presbytery of Chicago on 21st April 1913 and was Ordained as a Minister of the Presbyterian Church of America on 30th April 1913.

He was admitted as Minister of Elder Memorial Presbyterian Church, Leith, Scotland,

on 19th February 1914.

He then transferred to Greenock (South) Church, Scotland on 22nd June 1920

and then to Annbank Old Church, Tarbolton, Ayrshire on 3rd May 1931.

 

He acted as Chaplain to the Lord High Commissioner at the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland held in Edinburgh in May 1931.

The Lord High Commissioner was the former well known Member of Parliament, James Brown, who was born and lived in Tarbolton, Ayrshire, where John Youngson Thomson had his Ministry at Annbank Parish Church.

On his visit to Scotland in 1934, Paul Harris (who was the brother in law of John Youngson Thomson) whilst visiting John took dinner with “that very unusual character, Honourable James Brown, M.P.” Paul was very impressed with Mr Brown and appears to have been presented with a photograph of “Their Graces House Party and Suite” taken at the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1931, the photograph being still displayed at Rotary International Headquarters in Evanston, Chicago, USA.  

 

From 3rd May 1931, John resided at The Manse, Annbank, Tarbolton, Ayrshire.

He retired on 1st April 1957 and died on 26th December 1966 at 1 Glen Lochart Road, Edinburgh (A Nursing Home). His usual residence at that time was 6 Comely Bank Road, Edinburgh where he had resided with his brother James Hay Thomson and his sister Jean.

 

He was unmarried.

 

(4 of 8) Alexander Thomson (M4/P4)

Born 23rd September 1879 at 9 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

 

Resided at 9 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh on 4th April 1881.

Referred to as a Scholar, resident at 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh on 5th April 1891. He was not located on the 1901 Census

 

He travelled to Canada at the same time as his brother John Youngson Thomson on the Allan Line Steamship Co’ ship SS Grampian bound for Montreal, Canada. They sailed from Glasgow, Scotland on 17th September 1909. His destination is listed on the Ship’s Passenger Manifest as Montreal, Canada. His occupation is shown thereon

as a Salesman. He is recorded as being unmarried at that time.

 

On 28th May 1910 he resided at 414 West 60th St. Chicago, Illinois, USA.

 

He probably died in USA or Canada and was probably still unmarried.

 

(6 of 8) James Hay Thomson (M4/P4)

Born 29th April 1883 at 15 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

 

Referred to as a Scholar, resident at 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh on 5th April 1891.

Referred to as an Apprentice Upholsterer, resident at 41 Comely Bank Avenue, St Bernards, Edinburgh on 31st March 1901.

 

He travelled to Canada at the same time as his sister Ann (aka Annie) MoirThomson on the Allan Line Royal Mail Steamers and State Line ship SS Corinithian bound for Montreal, Canada. They sailed from Glasgow, Scotland on 27th October 1906. His destination is listed on the Ship’s Passenger Manifest as Montreal, Canada and his occupation is shown thereon as an Upholsterer.

 

It has been reported by a family member that James (Jim), who was a qualified engineer, joined the Ford Motor Company when he moved to USA, probably from Canada and that he stayed with Ford until his retirement. This has not been confirmed.

 

During a period in Chicago James, his sister Joanna and his mother and father lived about five blocks from his sister Jean and her husband Paul Harris, who, from about 1912 resided at “Comely Bank”, 10856 Longwood Drive, Morgan Park, Beverly Hills District of Chicago.

 

He is believed to have returned to Scotland with his sister Jane (aka Jean) Harris in 1955.

 

Referred to as being of Independent Means on his Death Certificate on 27th June 1970. His usual residence was 6 Comely Bank Road, St Bernards, Edinburgh where he had resided with his brother John Youngson Thomson.

 

He was unmarried and is buried with his sister Jean in Newington Cemetery, Edinburgh.

 

(7 of 8) Mary Ferguson Thomson (M4/P4)

Born 3rd April 1886 at 15 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

 

Referred to as a Scholar on 5th April 1891 resident at 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

 

Referred to as an Apprentice Dressmaker on 31st March 1901 resident at 41 Comely Bank Avenue, St Bernards, Edinburgh.

 

She may never have had a career and was probably “the daughter at home helping her mother.”

 

She travelled to Canada at the same time as her sister Jane (aka Jean) Thomson on the Allan Line Royal Mail Steamers and State Line ship SS Corinithian bound for Montreal, Canada. They sailed from Glasgow, Scotland on 29th June 1907. Her destination is listed on the Ship’s Passenger Manifest as Montreal, Canada. Her occupation is shown thereon as a Housekeeper. She was shown as being unmarried at that time.

She is believed to have moved to Canada and then to USA and later returned to Scotland.

She is mentioned as having been with sister Jean on the Beverly Hills Ramble with the Chicago Prairie Club (when Paul tore the sleeve of his Tweed Jacket) in 1910.

 

On the retirement of her brother James Hay Thomson, he and Mary set up house together in Edinburgh.

 

On her death in Edinburgh on 1st April 1977 she was unmarried.

 

(8 of 8) Joanna Lawrence Thomson (M4/P4)

Born 28th April 1891 at 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh

 

Referred to as a Scholar on 31st March 1901, resident at 41 Comely Bank Avenue, St Bernards, Edinburgh.

 

She travelled to the USA on 28th May1910 along with her father John and mother Annie, probably to attend the wedding of her sister Jean to Paul Harris in Chicago, Illinois, USA on 2nd July 1910. They travelled on the Anchor Line ship SS California headed for the destination Port of New York. They left Glasgow, Scotland on 28th May 1910. Her final destination is shown as Chicago, USA and it is stated that she was going to her brother Alexander at 414 West 60th Street, Chicago, Illinois. She is referred to as Joy (probably due to bad handwriting) on the Passenger Manifest and her occupation is shown as a Stenographer.

 

Joanna’s sister Jean and her husband Paul Harris resided at “Comely Bank”, 10856 Longwood Drive, Morgan Park, Beverly Hills District of Chicago, USA from about 1912 until Paul’s death on 27th January 1947. Joanna, her father and mother and brother James lived only five blocks away from Jean and Paul.

 

Joanna returned to Scotland and was referred to as a Bank Teller on her marriage on 24th September 1925 to Rev John Howe (P4) of Coronary Manse, Baillieborough, County Gavan, Ulster, Ireland. John was a Minister of the Original Secession Church of Scotland.

 

John was born in Paisley, near Glasgow, on 31st October 1891 and educated at Camphill School, Paisley (so called as it had been built on the site of an ancient Roman Camp) from 1897 to 1907 and at Glasgow University - MA 1913-1915 and 1919-1921

He saw war service with the Seaforth Highlanders in France 1915-1918.

 

He was Licensed by Glasgow United Original Secession Presbytery in 1921 and

Ordained and Inducted to Coronary, County Cavan, Ulster, Northern Ireland

(United Original Secession Presbytery of Ayr) on 24th February 1921.

He was transferred to Dundee Euclid Crescent United Original Secession Church on 21st October 1926.

On their trip to Scotland in 1934, Paul and Jean Harris met Joanna and John on several occasions. Paul seems to have had a high regard for them.

John retired on 31st October 1967 and died on 29th December 1974.

 

Joanna and John married at the Maitland Hotel, Shandwick Place, Edinburgh, when. her usual place of residence was The Neuk, 46 Denholm Street, Greenock.

 

At the time of Joanna’s death in Dundee on 24th April 1971, John and Joanna resided at 3 Adelaide Terrace, Dundee

 

John died at Alness, County of Ross and Cromarty on 29th December 1974.

 

 
PATERNAL LINE – GENERATIONS 5 (Section 1), 6 and 7

 

Joanna and John had two children (nephews of Jean Harris (nee Thomson)) as follows:

 

(Child 1 of 2) Andrew Youngson Howe (P5)

Born on 4th March 1928 at 3 Adelaide Terrace, Dundee.

 

He was educated at Dundee 1933-1944 and at St Andrews University 1956-1957.

He saw war service in Palestine attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Royal Ordinance Corps.

He was a Student Assistant at Dundee St Davids 1955-1956.

He was Licensed by the Presbytery of Dundee on 9th April 1957 and Ordained and Inducted to the charge of Farr, Bettyhill, By Thurso, Sutherland on 11th September 1957. He became Minister of a united charge combined with Altnaharra, Sutherland on 27th January 1969 and was transferred to Rosskeen, Alness, County of Ross & Cromarty on 23rd April 1969.

 

He married Dorothy Allison Thomson (P5) (Born on 10th October 1933 of parents John Malcolm Thomson and Sarah Mary Bell) of 9 Nesbitt Street, Dundee on 27th August 1957 at Ward Road Baptist Church, Dundee, according to the Forms of the Baptist Church. At that date he was still residing at 3 Adelaide Terrace, Dundee.

 

Andrew and Dorothy resided at the Manse of Farr, Bettyhill, By Thurso, Sutherland on 4th October 1964 and on 25th February 1967. They resided at Rosskeen Manse, Alness on 16th April 1970, 29th December 1974 and 7th September 1988.

 

Dorothy died on 9th September 1988 at Rosskeen Manse, Alness, County of

Ross & Cromarty.

 

Andrew died in Hospital at Inverness on 15th June 2004 his usual residence at the time being Bredon Cottage, 2 Springfield Terrace, Alness, County of Ross & Cromarty. He had retired from the Ministry on 31st December 1989 on the ground of ill health.

 

Andrew and Dorothy had three children, who in turn had at least four children (grandchildren of Andrew and Dorothy) and (Two grandnieces and a grandnephew of Jean (aka Jane) Thomson Harris).

Died in Royal Infirmary, Dundee (Usual residence 3 Adelaide Terrace, Dundee) on 12th July 1956.

 

He was unmarried.

Referred to as a Scholar resident at 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh on 5th April 1891.

Referred to as a Dressmaker resident at 41 Comely Bank Avenue, St Bernards, Edinburgh on 31st March 1901.

A relative has reported that she was a Primary School Teacher although this has not been firmly established.

 

She married Paul Percy Harris (P4) in Chicago, Illinois, USA on 2nd July 1910.

They had no children.

 

From 1912 Jean and Paul resided at 10856 Longwood Drive, Morgan Park, Beverly Hills District of Chicago, USA, affectionately called “Comely Bank” after the area of Edinburgh where Jean spent some of the days of her childhood and youth. In Chicago, her father, mother, brother James and sister Joanna lived only five blocks away.

 

Paul died in Chicago on 27th January 1947.

 

Past District Governor Basil Lewis, in his publication “Paul Harris in Britain”, states that Jean remained in Chicago until 1955 but then, like her parents before her, she returned to Scotland to stay initially with her two brothers (John Youngson Thomson and James Hay Thomson) and sister (Mary Ferguson Thomson) at (John’s home at the Manse), Annbank and later with her sister Joey (Joanna) in Dundee" *

 

She entered a nursing home at 19 Great King Street, Edinburgh in October 1963 where she died on 9th November 1963. Her usual place of residence was 28 Mansfield Gardens, Edinburgh.

 

She is buried in Newington Cemetery, Edinburgh.

MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 1

Maternal Great Grandparents and their descendants

 

The Maternal Great Grandparents were Alexander Moir (M1) and Ann Lawrence (M1) whose places and dates or birth and death are not at present known.

 

They were married at Brechin, Angus on 7th December 1814.

 

Alexander was referred to as an Overseer at Rubislaw Bleachfield, Aberdeen on 5th December 1845, as a Woolens’ Manufacturer on the Death Certificate of his son James on 20th April 1881 and as a Bleacher (deceased) on the Death Certificate of his daughter Ann on 29th December 1888.
