Why I Am A Rotarian

JUNE 13, 2006

During the summer months when I was a young girl, I helped my mother serve lunches every Thursday in our small Tennessee church to a group of men who were called Rotarians.  They were considered the elite group within our community, and I considered it such an honor to be able to serve them.

In high school and college, I was very involved in service organizations and found them to be extremely fulfilling for my inner self...thus, I was disappointed to be turned away from the Florida Key Club during my last two years of college, as it was reserved for just the male students of the campus.

Throughout my corporate America career years, I always found the time to volunteer and be part of a giving organization.  Five years ago, I was invited to attend a Rotary meeting.

I was amazed to see a few women present and to observe their involvement within the Club.  I saw my desire being fulfilled once again - an opportunity to serve the local community, as well as work toward making a difference with international goals.

I am making sure that my children know that this 100-year old organization will be there for them in future years when they are desiring to give back.

I haven't looked back since becoming a member of Rotary. I would say to young girls (and boys) who are exploring their interests and fulfilling their dreams to expand their horizons and strive to become part of Rotary when they become an adult, as it can be one of the most rewarding experiences any individual can have.
