In 1936,
Rotary returned to Atlantic City between June 22nd and 26th. 9,914
registered representing 49 countries. Along with their New Jersey hosts,
Philadelphia Rotarians acted as hosts and hostesses for the week.
Paul Harris did not attend as he and Jean
Harris were still visiting Rotarians in South America but his Convention
Message was read
out by
his old friend Silvester Schiele. Paul told of the various
honors
he had received from the South American countries of Argentina, Brazil,
Chile and Ecuador. He accepted the honors - The Order of the Sun; Order
of Merit; Order of the Southern Cross on behalf of Rotary International.
"I accepted on behalf of Rotary", Paul said. "Rotary
still stands well in South America" was his conclusion.

District Governor George W. MacLellan of Santa Barbara gave a speech
entitled "In a World where Death is Long". He talked of how surpluses
are things that make foundations. A billion
dollars had been given to Foundations by just three men - J D
Rockefeller Sr, J D Rockefeller Jr, and Andrew Carnegie. Yet little is
known about foundations.
Rotary was
doing well but if you have new objectives or major extensions you need
extra funds. MacLellan concluded by announcing that "This Rotary
Foundation can do tremendous things". |
Arthur Sheldon (amongst others) was honoured at the Convention,
having passed away a little earlier. Sheldon, of Kingston, NY had been
Chairman of the Business Methods Committee 1910-11; Member of the
Committee on Extension Work on the continent of Europe and British Isles
1911-12; Member of the Committee on Boys Work 1921-22.
 Unlike Sheldon,
incoming RI President Will Manier told the Convention that "I
have no slogan to offer you".
Calum Thomson
London withdrew its invitation for the Rotary convention in 1937 because
of the closeness of the coronation ceremony. In order not to disappoint
the Rotarians who have made their plans to attend a Rotary convention in
Europe “ … the board has decided that the convention of that year shall
be held somewhere on the continent of Europe during the week of June 6”.
