Angus Mitchell

President, Rotary International 1948-49

Sir Angus Mitchell (1884-1961) retired from a successful grain broking business in 1936 to give his whole attention to two abiding concerns — goodwill and understanding among the people of the world, and the welfare of youth.

He found in Rotary, as an international organisation offering friendship and service, an opportunity to further these aims.

As President of Rotary International in 1948-49 (the first Australian to hold this office) he was able to achieve reconciliation between former enemies and successfully negotiate the re-admission of the Rotary clubs of Germany and Japan to Rotary International. His interest in youth followed from his concern for goodwill and understanding. Young people are the generation of tomorrow, and only if our generation gives them every opportunity to excel will we have a better world in the future.

President Rotary International, 1948-49
