Copenhagen Rotary Club (KRK) received its charter in 1922 but was actually founded in November 1921, making it the FIRST CLUB IN SCANDINAVIA. (from The Copenhagen Post, published by Copenhagen RC)

 


Den først danske Rotaryklub - Københavns Rotary Klub - blev organiseret den 30. november 1921 og fik charter den 3. august 1922. I løbet af de følgende 8 år blev der oprettet klubber i Århus (1923), Korsør og Ålborg (1925), Kolding og Odense (1927), Nakskov, Nykøbing F. og Randers (1928), Maribo, Slagelse og Vejle (1929). Den 15. marts 1930 oprettedes distrikt 75 under Rotary International (RI) - omfattende hele Danmark.

Under 2. verdenskrig måtte Rotary indstille sin virksomhed i flere lande. Nogle steder blev det direkte forbudt at mødes, og i Danmark anså man det for rigtigst ikke at mødes officielt. Straks efter 1945 kunne man igen tage fat på at oprette nye klubber. Behovet var stort, og derfor blev det nødvendigt at inddele landet i tre distrikter, nemlig 80, 81 og 82; i 1950 blev distrikterne omdøbt til 147, 146 og 145. I 1968 blev distrikt 147 delt i to distrikter - det nye distrikt fik nummer 148. I 1972 så distrikt 144 dagens lys samtidig med, at der blev foretaget nogle grænsereguleringer i Jylland. Herefter var der 5 distrikter - et antal, der også passer i dag.
 


Fra 1.7.91 har RI af edb-hensyn sat et nul på alle distriktsnumre. I Danmark har vi derfor nu: Distrikt 1470 Storkøbenhavn, Nordsjælland, Bornholm og Grønland

I spidsen for hvert distrikt står en distriktsguvenør, valgt på årskongressen for ét år. Distrikterne danner i fællesskab Rotary Danmarks Råd, som mødes 2-3 gange om året, ligesom de har oprettet et landssekretariat.
