The Rotary Club of Milan was officially established on December 20, 1923 - the first Rotary Club in Italy and one of the first anywhere in Europe. The opening of the Milanese Club was the result of the initiative shown by a small group of enthusiastic proponents, including Irish engineer Leo Giulio Culleton, Scotsman James Henderson (Vice-President of Cucirini Cantoni Coats, Englishman Reginald Price Mountney (Financial Correspondent for the Manchester Guardian), Canadian Wendell Clark (commissary of the Canadian government) and Italian lawyer Achille Bossi.

This group met often between June and December 1923 and the members were soon joined by others who were in attendance for the foundation meeting, held on December 20 of that same year.

James Henderson was the first President of the Rotary Club of Milan, with Leo Giulio Culleton as the first Secretary. In 1925, Senator Prof. Luigi Mangiagalli was elected President, followed a year later by Pietro Soldini.
The Rotary Club of Milan was suspended on December 31, 1938 and reconstituted on November 11, 1946.

L’istituzione ufficiale del Rotary Club Milano, primo Rotary Club in Italia e tra i primi in Europa, avvenuta il 20 dicembre 1923, fu il risultato dell’iniziativa di un piccolo gruppo di entusiasti promotori, tra i quali l’ingegnere irlandese Leo Giulio Culleton, lo scozzese James Henderson, vicepresidente della Cucirini Cantoni Coats, l’inglese Reginald Price Mountney, corrispondente finanziario del Manchester Guardian, il canadese Wendell Clark, commissario del Governo del Canada e l’avvocato Achille Bossi.

A questo gruppo di promotori , che si erano riuniti più volte tra i mesi di giugno e di dicembre 1923, si aggiunsero altre persone che risultarono presenti alla seduta di fondazione del 20 dicembre.James Henderson fu il primo Presidente del Rotary Club Milano, mentre Leo Giulio Culleton ne fu il primo segretario. Nel 1925 venne eletto Presidente  il Senatore Prof. Luigi Mangiagalli, che nel 1926 venne sostituito dal Gr. Uff. Pietro Soldini.

Il Rotary Club Milano fu sospeso il 31 dicembre 1938 e ricostituito l’11 novembre 1946.
