The Rotary Club of Milan was officially established on December 20, 1923 - the first Rotary Club in Italy and one of the first anywhere in Europe. The opening of the Milanese Club was the result of the initiative shown by a small group of enthusiastic proponents, including Irish engineer Leo Giulio Culleton, Scotsman James Henderson (Vice-President of Cucirini Cantoni Coats, Englishman Reginald Price Mountney (Financial Correspondent for the Manchester Guardian), Canadian Wendell Clark (commissary of the Canadian government) and Italian lawyer Achille Bossi. This group met often between June and December 1923 and the members were soon joined by others who were in attendance for the foundation meeting, held on December 20 of that same year.
The founder members were as follows:
James Henderson was the first President of the Rotary
Club of Milan, with Leo Giulio Culleton as the first Secretary. In 1925,
Senator Prof. Luigi Mangiagalli was elected President, followed a year later
by Pietro Soldini.
