ROTARY CLUB OF PIETERMARITZBURG

The first Rotary Club in Africa was established in Johannesburg On 1 July 1921. The Club assumed an active role in the formation of other clubs in South Africa including the Durban Club on 7 April 1924. In its turn the latter sponsored the formation of the Rotary Club of Pietermaritzburg.

On 5 March 1925 fourteen men met in the office of the Editor of the Natal Witness, H.F. Rose, at 6.15pm. Dr Charles Cooper was elected Chairman and the Secretary, Major R. A. Way, read out the names of 21 prospective members.

This list had already been approved by the RI Special Commissioner for the Southern African Region. The meeting nominated members to serve on the Board of Directors and appointed a committee to draft the Constitution and By-laws. It was also decided that meetings would be held at the imperial Hotel every second Thursday at 1pm.

The inaugural luncheon meeting was held on 19 March 1925 and Mr Hugh Bryan was appointed Charter President.
