THE HISTORY OF DISTRICT 4910, Argentina

A Part of Our History of Rotary in South America

Prepared by the district and not verified by Rotary Global History

ESP

Rotarians consider Rotary as a big family and that is why we know that, from its origins, we can follow in the footsteps of the expansion in the world of the idea which was born in Chicago in the winter of 1905.
Paul Harris was the creator that launched and transformed it into action. He knew how to do it and that's why Rotary remained and grew.

Rotary reaches the Rio de La Plata with the founding of the club in Montevideo on February 1, 1919.
Months later, the RC was born in Buenos Aires. Since then, successively emerged clubs in Lima, Rio de Janeiro, Rosario in 1923, La Plata and Cordoba in 1925 to the following year.

Faced with such a proliferation of clubs, Rotary designates the Spanish citizen resident in Uruguay, Heriberto Percival Coates as commissioner to serve them and help them.
Coates was the initiator of the establishment of the club in Montevideo and was later elected governor of District 63 in the period 1930-1931.
RC Buenos Aires is the first club founded in our country.

On November 8, 1919, at the headquarters of the Jockey Club was the inaugural meeting chaired by Dr. Jorge Miter, then director of the newspaper La Nacion.
16 partners formed the club sponsored by the club in Montevideo.

Three years later, organized by the Buenos Aires club Rosario in 1925, and does the same with the club in La Plata, ancestor of those who today make up District 4910.
Later, in 1931 founded the club in Tigre, which in turn implements the birth of the clubs of San Isidro and Vicente Lopez, who later gave birth to the clubs in our district, Almirante Brown and Avellaneda.
Since then, Argentine clubs began to integrate the Rotary world that continues to grow, develop and expand its principles in their work quality and quantity.
Now we, the current Rotarians are responsible for that growth.

The current District 4910 recognizes three different sources of growth that we call "centers of development" or "small families", that of La Plata, Quilmes and the coming North.

The Development and the "Small Family of La Plata"
After twelve years of its founding, the RC of La Plata sponsored its first godson, the club Quilmes.
Chascomús will be followed in 1941, Coronel Brandsen in 1950, Berisso and Ensenada in 1954.
The location of these four clubs would seem to indicate a recent expansion into the area and the port.

Ten years later, after the founding of the club of Bell City, begins a period of high growth leading to the founding of La Plata North in 1973.
In nine years there have been twelve clubs, including Villa Argüello, which sadly disappeared.

After a break of five years between 1982 and 1987 the offspring of La Plata increases to five clubs.
It subsequently created two more clubs, an urban, Jean Thomson in 1994, and other rural areas, recovered Ranchos General Paz in 1996.

Today, the territory determined by the location of the clubs that recognize RC La Plata as their ancestor, takes the form of a large oval located in the southern part of the District.
The northern boundary is set by the Bell City area, the south line linking with Veronica Chascomús, stretching from the west to Brandsen Alejandro Korn Coronel, and the eastern boundary is formed by clubs who are on the coast of Rio de La Plata, Ensenada, Berisso and Magdalena.
The twenty-five clubs from the family of La Plata grouped about 480 Rotarians who represent more than 40% of the partners in the District.

The Development and the Small Family of Quilmes
Quilmes is the first club that was sponsored by La Plata, its charter is the date of issuance on December 3, 1937 and its first president was Don Abelardo Fustinioni.
The foundation is due to the inspiration of Don Joaquin CIBILS Cerrato, then Governor of District 63, who thought that the territorial gap between Buenos Aires and La Plata should be filled by Quilmes given its geographical location and importance.
The task entrusted to Heriberto Percival Coates, a successful disseminator of ideas Rotarians in South America, which in turn summoned the RC of La Plata to assume patronage.
Since 1941 Quilmes began its own extension with the club's foundation of Lomas de Zamora, then in 1949, Florencio Varela was born and since then, in nine years, there are seven new clubs.

After a break of five years will create seven other clubs that make the extension reach the area of Turdera Llavallol.
Today these twenty clubs that stretch from the Rio de La Plata Llavallol up in the west, bring together more than 400 Rotarians, equivalent to 35% of the members of the District.

The Development and Family Arrive North
In November 1931 the club was founded Tigre in District 63.
Soon after, in 1937, begins an expansion into San Isidro, in the year and forty-one will be responsible for the creation of the club Almirante Brown of our current district.
On the other hand, November 17, 1937 formed the club Vicente Lopez.
In 1940, inspired by its President Juan Compiano, is sponsoring the formation of the Club de Avellaneda entering the Oct. 24 in District 32.
Is exposed so the penetration of Rotary in areas of our current territory producing clubs that belong to District 4820.
Avellaneda later founded four clubs in neighboring towns, Wilde in 1953, Dominico in 1963, Sarandí in 1967 and finally Piñeyro in 73.
Almirante Brown reaches more development in the surrounding area since 1949 with the founding of the club Lanus.
Sponsor a Burzaco in 1958, Rafael Calzada in 1969 and finally Adrogué in 1993.
Territorially covers the northwest area of the district, from Remedios Climbing up Gerli, projecting westward to reach Valentin Alsina.
This small family born in the north currently has 19 clubs with approximately three hundred Rotarians, ie 25% of Members of the district.

Digital Evolution and Territorial District
The growth of Rotary, especially its largest land area, made it necessary to gradually increase the number of districts.
With the creation of the International Association of Rotary Clubs in 1927, was installed District No. 63 which included Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.

In 1929 the district was reduced by the separation of clubs in Brazil, and during the period 1938-1939 is divided into two, numbered 3 and 31, the latter corresponds to Uruguay and the southern part of Argentina.
The Governor in the two years of the transition was Don Joaquin Cerrato CIBILS.

The following year, District 31 is clear from a territory that includes the southern Argentine, and takes the number 32.
It was his first Governor Don Enrique Gil's RC Buenos Aires.
In this district, which is kept for ten years, there are clubs Avellaneda, Chascomús, Almirante Brown and Lomas de Zamora.
The clubs are located in our territory to reach the current number of six.

In the years 1949-1950 District No. 32 is divided again, and the No. 138 which covers the northern part of the province of Buenos Aires and the entire territory of La Pampa.
His first was Governor of the Don Carlos Porro, of Rotary Chandigarh.

During the period 1955-1956 District 138 gave the southern part of its jurisdiction for the formation of a new, the number 139.
In the District 138 clubs in our current district reach twenty.

Since July 1957 there is a reordering district, and the number 491 that extends to Santa Rosa, La Pampa, and its first Governor Juan Maize Somavilla that belonged to the RC Berazategui.
In the 1970-1971 financial year for which the District Governor was Don Alberto B. Tsuji from RC Burzaco, the district reduces its size ceding the space between Santa Rosa and Esteban Echeverría, leaving the district with 43 clubs.

In 1991, during the governorship of Don Telmo RC Rafael Alvarez of Calzada, one arrives at the current numbering of District 4910, the date composed by 65 clubs.

The End.
It would seem that we have reached the end, actually we have come to this present, it may seem the end of our history associated with Rotary.
Of course that is the past which builds history, tomorrow is the future, what we need to finish, which expects to be started, that is the commitment of Rotary to this, we will.
For the chronicle of the events referred to events that are part of the great history of humankind, the 95 years of Rotary and 75 years of La Plata RC does not seem to be many, but in particular the history of them have been sufficient to show, each in its own way, the benefits of the idea and action Rotary.
The evocation should include thanks and tribute, and must be accompanied by an intense developed to reaffirm the validity of our institution, thinking that someday, those who continue the story of Rotary Club and La Plata find justifiable reason to remind us, as we have done with those who preceded us.

Appendix
Since the conclusion of this story at the end of 2000, there have been some changes in the composition of the District.
The loss of the RC Piñeyro was overshadowed by the delivery of three new charters, all of them in 2001-2002 during the governorship of Julian White, who led the work initiated last year by the Governor Higinio Truppi.
The RC LONGCHAMPS renewed the presence of Rotary in that community. It was sponsored by clubs Burzaco and Turdera and received the charter, dated July 14, 2001.
RC Abasto was sponsored by La Plata Meridiano V RC and RC La Plata West.
Its charter is dated by the RI July 21, 2001.
The Charter of the RC Hudson is dated February 28 2002 and his organization was in charge of Quilmes RC West.
The designation of these three new clubs to accurately determine the location of their territories.

They are currently training at a club composed of a group of people called by the La Plata RC Meridiano V on the west side of the city of La Plata, who will receive the name of La Plata club West Highlands. With this, the District 4910 will soon comprise 68 clubs.
