THE HISTORY OF DISTRICT 4710, Argentina

A Part of our History of Rotary in South America

Prepared by the district and not verified by Rotary Global History

The first news of Rotary came to Brazil around 1916 brought by the American consul Richard Paul Momsen.
In addition to Momsen, the Englishman Herbt P. Coates, founder of RC of Montivideo in 1918 which was the first of South America, the Rotary Club of Rio de Janeiro was founded in 1923 under the number 1362.

In 1922, there were only 42 districts covering the clubs in the United States of North America, Canada, Mexico and Cuba.
Of all the clubs existing in other countries, including those in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, were not districted.
This situation remained until 1927, when District 63 was created to cover Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay.
Then, after two years, our clubs were incorporated and became part of District 63.

District 72 was eventually created only for Brazil with 12 clubs, and had 10 Governors General, called Tomes de Souza.

From the first of July 1938, District 72 was divided into four:

  • D-26: Amazonas, Pará, Maranhão, Piaui, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas e Acre.
  • D-27: Sergipe, Bahia, Espirito Sando, Rio de Janeiro, Parte de Minas Gerais and Parte do estado de São Paulo (Vale do Paraíba)
  • D-28: Parte do Estado de São Paulo, Parte de Minas Gerais, Goias e Mato-Grosso
  • D-29: Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul
