THE HISTORY OF DISTRICT 4430 Brazil

A Part of Our History of Rotary in South America

PORT

Prepared by the district and not verified by Rotary Global History

At the time of the founding of RC of Rio de Janeiro the Rotary world counted 41 districts, covering only the clubs of the United States, Canada, Mexico and Cuba. This situation remained until, in 1927, District 63 was created covering Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and then Paraguay.

Brazil requested its own district and its first claim was brought to the Cleveland Convention in 1925 by Frank Elton, of Rio de Janeiro, and by Benedito Montenegro, of Sao Paulo. For two years we were incorporated into District 63, with the Governors being Donato Cominara of Montevideo in the year 1927-28 and Cupertino Del Campo of Buenos Aires in the year 1928-29.

District 72 was created during the Conference based in the city of Sao Paulo and encompassing all Brazilian states, in the year 1930. In the year 1935-36 the District Governor was Armando de Arruda Pereira of RC Sao Paulo, who 1940-41, became the first Brazilian to chair Rotary International. On 10 July 1938, the District 72 was divided into four, namely: 26, 27, 28 and 29.

Later, District 27 became District 457 and was proud to have the second President of Rotary International, Imbassahy Ernesto de Mello of RC Niteroi in the year 1975-76.

District 29 was redistricted and the number changed to District 119 until June 1956, when it was again redistricted as District 461 and the first Governor was Arouche Jose Toledo of RC Mogi.

District 461 gave the Brazilian 3 0 to chair the Rotary International, which happened in the management 1990-91, with the companion Viriato Paulo Correa da Costa Santos of the RC.

In 1991 the district suffered another redistricting and was allocated its new District 4430 which still exists today.
