Rotary Club of Kabul, Afghanistan
with 15 founding members received its charter on 8th March, 1968
when Rotary Club of Lahore, the # 1 club of Pakistan in RI District
307 Pakistan & Afghanistan (Afghanistan was geographically clubbed
with Pakistan at that time) sponsored it and my father Late Basir
Ali Shaikh was Life Treasurer and President (1967-68) of Rotary Club
of Lahore. However, the Rotary Club of Kabul ceased to function in
1979 due to invasion of foreign forces of former Soviet Union.
After two decades and a half it was heartening to see the revival of
Rotary Club of Kabul, the #1 club of Afghanistan, on 28th March,
2003 with 41 chartered members. RI President (2002-2003) Bhichai
Rattakul was instrumental in facilitating the efforts of Rotary Club
of Hayward Sunset, CA, USA which comprised almost entirely of Afghan
immigrants, along with the Rotary Club of Uni Town, Peshawar (North
West Frontier Province of Pakistan now re-named as Khyber-Pakhtun-Khwa)
under the leadership of DG (2002-2003) Ashraf Baig RI District 3270
(Pakistan & Afghanistan) to re-sponsor the Rotary Club of Kabul. Now
both the clubs are part of RI District 3272 due to re-structuring of
RI District 3270 (Pakistan & Afghanistan) into RI District
3271 (Pakistan) and RI District 3272 (Pakistan & Afghanistan)
