A Part of Our History of Rotary in Europe

Prepared by the district and not verified by Rotary Global History

Dystrykt 2230 (Białoruś, Ukraina,Polska) ma trzy oficjalne strony www:
1. Strona główna www.rotary.org.pl
2. Strona wewnętrzna (tylko dla Rotarian)
3. Strona wewnętrzna do edycji
danych klubowo-członkowskich, do której dostęp
mają tylko Prezydenci RC i upoważnione przez nich osoby

Strony 2 i 3 dostępne są w zakładce "Tylko dla Rotarian"

W dniu 19 marca 1931 roku w Rotary International zarejestrowany został pierwszy polski klub - Warszawski Klub Rotariański, którego jesteśmy spadkobiercą i kontynuatorem.

Rotary Outpost for Rotarians in exile / Placówka Rotary dla Rotarian na wygnaniu z 5 okupowanych krajów: Belgii, Czechosłowacji, Francji, Holandii i Polski.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

The history of Rotary in Poland began in 1931.

On the 19th March 1931 Rotary International registered the first polish Rotary Club - Rotary Club of Warsaw, whose ideals we still continue. In 1936 eight existing Rotary Clubs were created by Rotary International as a District 85, that included the whole Country. After the World War II and the invasion of Nazis and Soviets, Rotary Clubs in Poland could not continue their existence and Rotary International took back the membership cards of Rotary in Poland. In 1940 Rtn Kazimierz Zienkiewicz, the past President of RC Katowice initiated in London Rotary Outpost for Rotarians in exile from 5 occupied countries: Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Holland and Poland. This institution existed until 1944.

After not existing for 50 years Rotary Clubs returned to Poland. On the 10th June 1989 the Rotary Club of Warsaw was again included to RI under number 26654. It was the first chartered Rotary Club in the post communistic countries. Since 1989 all Polish Rotary Clubs were joined with Swedish District 2390 and received great support (not only financial) from Sweden. In 1995 the “Special Extension Area” was created for Polish Rotary Clubs and was lead by past Governor of District 2390, Rtn Gunnar Fjellander.

On the 1st July 1997 during the celebration in Music Academy in Warsaw the Polish District 2230 was created with 39 Rotary Clubs with the assistance of President Elect of RI Rtn James L. Lacy. As a first Governor of this District was elected Rtn Bohdan Kurowski, a journalist from RC Olsztyn and Rtn Alojzy Leszek Gzella, also a journalist from RC Lublin, was nominated as Governor Elect. It was the first RI District created in the Eastern Europe. In 1999, under the District Governor Rtn Eugeniusz Piontek from RC Warszawa Old Town, Belarusian and Ukrainian Rotary Clubs were joined to District 2230. That has changed the character of the District to international and giving us a chance to support our friends from Belarus and Ukraine Rotary Clubs. Looking at the size of the territory and number of inhabitants, it is one of the largest Districts in the World.

At the end of 2007, District 2230 had 2 585 Rotarians in 117 Rotary Clubs. In Poland there are 77 Rotary Clubs with 1822 members, in the Ukraine 37 Clubs with 698 members and in Belarus 3 Clubs with 65 members. Every month the number of new Clubs and members is growing. This is why the board of the District in agreement with most Rotary Clubs is planning to divide our District into 3 smaller to become more cohered and easier to manage.
