The History of this District is explained in greater detail in the
history of Rotary in
Malta.
The Rotary Clubs of Sicily were originally administered under the
Governorship of District 190 which was created in 1971 and the first
District Governor of which was Mario Florio.
In 1977, 9 years after the formation of the Rotary Club of Malta,
that club was added to the Sicilian clubs and the District
renumbered to 210.
The First District Governor of this new District number was Oreste
Geraci.
Only one year later, in the 1978/79 year, District Governor Giuseppe
Gioia (who became Director of the Board of Rotary
International in the years 1994-96) was elected to administer the newly renumbered District 211.
No further changes were made until 1991/92 when the district was
eventually brought into line with the world wide addition of a "0"
to cater for new computer numbering.
And so District 2110 came into existence although no alterations
occurred to the region covered by the District.
Despite several changes in numbering, the district has, since the
formation of the Rotary Club of Malta, continued to administer the
club on Sicily and the one club on Malta.
The first Rotary Club of this District was Palermo,
born 7 of January 1925.
It was not until 2002 that the Rotary Club of La Valetta became the
second club in Malta.
Five years later in May of 2007, the Rotary Club of Gozo became the
third and most recent addition to the Malta clubs.
At the time of this brief history (september
2008) , District 2110 administers 3
clubs in Malta and 82 clubs in Sicily with over 6,000 members.
