THE HISTORY OF DISTRICT 2040, Italy

A Part of Our History of Rotary in Europe

Prepared by the district and not verified by Rotary Global History

District 2040

Located in Northern Italy, District 2040 is the smallest by territorial extension, nevertheless extremely active and with the longest lasting tradition (the first Italian Rotary Club were founded here).
Territory covers the north Lombardy area contiguous to the Swiss border.
Relying on solid industrial roots, deep cultural heritage, natural and tourist attractions, it is a densely populated area (8.9million inhabitants).
Extending from the Po river plains to the lakes region up to the Alps chain crowning the Italian border, it includes six provinces (counties), namely:
-Milano : located in the plains, with a population of 1.25 million, is the Italian business center, with vivid cultural life and tradition.
- Bergamo : an historical town on a hill over-looking the plains and backed by the Pre-alps.
- Como : a jewel on the western branch of the Lake which has been named after it.
- Lecco : the other town at the mountains feet located on the Como Lake eastern branch.
- Monza : a will-be province capital, once the main city of the Longobards reign.
- Sondrio : the most northern town of the region, at the foot of the Alps.
- Varese : extended on the Prealps hills, a green town close to Lake Maggiore and other water surfaces.

Nowadays (september 2008), District 2040 accounts for 85 Rotary Clubs, with over 5.400 Rotarians, and has a long lasting service tradition in favor of the New Generations, as testified by the 32 Rotaract and 9 Interact Clubs and the annual RYLA seminar.
