THE DISTRICT 1800 HISTORY

Prepared by the district and not verified by Rotary Global History

DEUTSCH

We are pleased that you are interested in Rotary. Rotary International is the oldest organization of service clubs in the world, (founded in 1905 in Chicago).

The members of Rotary use their professional skills in voluntary work to help others, which is the motto of Rotary - self-serving others - a reality.

In District 1800 (East Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt), 3500 men and women in 72 clubs "Rotarianise" this idea.

District 1800 covers is a beautiful area of Germany.

Its diversity can be seen in its people, in the different regions, cultures and cultural monuments, and from the big cities to the small towns.

There is even great diversity in its topography, the economic structure and even the climate.

Winter brings snow to the hills around the Elbe, while a mild summer sun warms the many walkers who trek this region. Covering an area of 40,000 sq km District 1800 is the largest in all German-speaking countries.

The District's western border is the the larger section of the Weser, while the Elbe forms our eastern boundary across the Mittelland Canal. The landscape still includes large areas of agricultural land in the Magdeburger Börde, and in the Altmark Calendario Berger country. Recreation areas extend from resin and Weserbergland to the Lueneburg Heath. The first class tourist attractions include a long pearl necklace of historic cities and towns.

Quedlinburg has been included in the list of World Cultural Heritage; Naumburg has its world-famous cathedral; the Hildesheim old town with its cathedral; Goslar with the Imperial Palace; the restored Wernigerode or the half-timbered jewel of Celle and of course, the world famous Pied Piper of Hamelin.

Garden enthusiasts from around the world flock to the facilities of Baroque Hanover-Herrenhausen and the Rosenbeeten of Sangerhausen.
A dense network of universities and colleges spans the area with outstanding examples such as Goettingen and Halle / Saale. In

72 clubs meet approximately 3,500 Rotarians with a total population of more than four million. Politically the district includes the entire state of Saxony-Anhalt and - geographically - half of Lower Saxony.

The big centers are the country's two main cities - both population priorities - Hanover and Magdeburg, to Brunswick, Bitterfeld, Salzgitter and Wolfsburg. Thus, both the industrial and economic focal points - from steel production to the automobile industry to microelectronics.

The two most polluting German roads, highways A 7 and A 2, and the railway lines-Ruhr Berlin and Hamburg and Frankfurt through and connect both the individual parts District.
