THE HISTORY OF DISTRICT 1620, Belgium

A Part of Our History of Rotary in Europe

Prepared by the district and not verified by Rotary Global History

District 1620: Presentation of the district

District 1620 is one of three districts in Belgium.

Despite having been Past Director of RI in the year 1927-1928, Albert Bouchery Rc Oostende, negotiated to have our own district called District 61 which was created in 1929.

This number became 68 in 1950, and later became District 162 in 1957.

In 1968 the district was divided into 162 and 163 and in 1978 the current division into three districts in 1620, 1630 and 2170 took place in the middle.

Currently there are over 3,200 Rotarians in 81 clubs in the west. The Rc Oostende (1923), chartered by the Rc Paris (France) is the oldest club in our district and Belgium. It was followed by RC Gent and Charleroi Rc (both 1926), the Rc Rc Brugge and La Louviere (both 1927). Each year new clubs are emerging.

Belgium had the honor of being the district host of the 18th International Convention in 1927 in Oostende. 7000 Rotarians from 40 countries were guests of our Rotarian King, His Majesty the King Albert I, who was also an honorary member of RC San Fransisco.

The district in 1620 was also the district host in 1961-1962 of the Past Vice-President Morraye Clement, a member of Rc Gent. He was Past Director in 1960-1962. Past our other Directors were Alphonse Fievez of Soignies Rc in 1954-1956 and Paul Rc Santens of Oudenaarde in 1995-1997.
