District 1020 Archives

The Hamilton and Strathaven Rotary Clubs were originally to remain within District 102 during District re-organisation in 1972. The two clubs expressed a willingness to join the new District 123 (now District 1230) and they were successful in their representations.

The Rotary Club of Hamilton held its inaugural meeting on 12th November 1925 with its charter date being 18th February 1926. The Club is RIBI's 201st club and its RI charter number is 2249. The Rev. T F Harkness Graham was the club's Founder President and James Ballantyne the founder secretary. There were 32 founder members in total.

The Rotary Club of Strathaven held its inaugural meeting on 13th May 1947 and received its charter on the 20th of December. RIBI Club 618 had 24 founder members with Robert Downie the Founder President and Harry Blake the founder secretary.

These two clubs expressed a desire to leave District 102 (now District 1020) after the 1972 split.

Here are some original news clippings of the controversy.
