Histories of Clubs of RI Presidents
Paulo V. C. Costa, 1990-1991, convention history
The
Rotary Club of Santos, founded on 26 February 1927 and accepted on May 21, 1927,
when its charter was issued establishing the Rotary International, is the third
club in Brazil.
The
first, previously noted, was the Rotary Club of Rio de Janeiro, founded on
December 15, 1922 (accepted on 28 February 1923), and the second was the Rotary
Club of São Paulo, founded on 13 February 1924 (admission on March 24, 1924).
After
several talks, met at the office building of the honorable
Citty Co. Dr. Bernard F. Browne, manager of
Cia Citty, Dr. Ismael Coelho de
Souza, the Cia Docks of Santos and João Carlos de Mello, exporter of coffee,
to discuss the foundation in the city of Santos, a Rotary Club.
The Rotarian Henry Irving Gallyon,
1st Secretary of the Rotary Club of São Paulo (this is the
best club of the unit in training), also came to help and guide its creation.
He made extensive explanation
about Rotary and the Ideal of Service could provide real benefits to their
community and the businessmen and professionals, disseminating professional
ethics in classes that would represent the original members.
After other necessary clarifications, the Rotarian
Gallyon finalized suggesting sending a circular to businessmen and
professionals from the council, calling for them to
complete in a noble order, making him one of the
founding members of the Rotary Club of Santos.
A circular distributed was received with general sympathy that
the invited meeting is on February 26, 1927 in the building no.
31 da Praça dos Andradas, which was transformed into a meeting
attended by 25 businessmen and professionals.
The meeting on
February 26 was transformed into the Foundation Board.
Dr. Ismael Coelho de Souza
chaired the proceedings and did extensive exposure on the
purpose of a Rotary Club and the benefits it could provide to the community
Santos.

As interpreter of
the feelings of all present, Mr. Paulo Fernandes Gasgon
then proposed that the Assembly, by acclamation, was elected the first Board of
Directors of Rotary Club of Santos thus constituted: President Dr. Ismael Coelho de Souza; Vice President João Carlos de Mello; Treasurer Dr. Bernard F. Bowne ;

Marcos de Souza Dantas. The proposal was accepted unanimously with warm applause.
The inaugural meeting of the Rotary
Club of Santos, held on March 3, 1927, in the hall of the restaurant of the
Club's Scholarship, was the attendance of the 25 founder members and the
following Rotarian visitors: IB Suthar, the Rotary
Club of Tampico; Oscar
Weinshenk, T.
Lisboa Wright and Rodrigo Octávio
Filho, all of the Rotary Club of Rio de
Janeiro,
and Paulo Moraes Barros, Irving
Henru Gallyon, Jorge de Moraes Barros,
Cantidio de Moura Campos
and Herminio Gomes Moreira, affiliated with the Rotary Club of São Paulo.
