Sometime in the beginning of the year 1913, the Rotary Club of Madison, Wisconsin, started out as an idea discussed between a traveling salesman and a local tradesman. The initial session started with just four businessmen—John McKenna Sr. (Real Estate), Art Schulkamp (Insurance), R.J. Nickles (Electrical Contracting) and Rex Welton (Automobiles)--who invited four more to the next meeting who invited four more to the next and slowly it grew.  Our Rotary Club received its charter of June 2, 1913, becoming the 71st club to be formed.  From its humble beginnings, the Rotary Club of Madison has grown to 500 members, is among the 10 largest Rotary Clubs in the world and celebrated its 90th anniversary year in 2003. 

The Rotary Club of Madison plays an active role in supporting many diverse community programs.  Through its associated Madison Rotary Foundation, it distributes more than $500,000 annually to such programs as youth scholarships, community grants, international grants, older adult fitness activities and an ethics symposium for high school students. In addition, the Rotary Club of Madison has strongly supported the Rotary International’s Polio Eradication Program.  The members enjoy fellowship through a variety of opportunities including a weekly luncheon with interesting speakers, community volunteer activities, a variety of fellowship group activities such as gourmet dinner gatherings, an investment club and even a group for interested sailors.
