Rotary Club of Hartford, Connecticut Celebrates 100 Years

The Rotary Club of Hartford Connecticut celebrated 100 years of Rotary in a big way at the Crowne Plaza Saturday night, September 17, 2011. Many reminisced of the first celebration just 100 years ago. Attendees at that time included Paul Harris. On 17 September, the guest of honor was RI President Kalyan Banerjee and his wife Binota.

Arriving from Chicago, President Banerjee was escorted directly to Channel 61 and the  Hartford Courant (owned by the Tribune) for interviews before the dinner.

A citation from the State of Connecticut was presented by the CT Lt. Governor to RI President Kalyan. Two television stations were there to cover the event. The mayor of Hartford was there as well.

Over 175 Rotarians and family members gathered to celebrate. Some of the current Hartford Rotarians were dressed in period costumes from the early 20th century, the Edwardian era.

Pres. Banerjee had asked that in lieu of gifts, a contribution to The Rotary Foundation would be preferred. The Club did that in a VERY significant way and presented eleven Paul Harris Recognitions with a contribution of $11,000 to The Rotary Foundation.  In addition, several recognitions were made by the Rotary Club of East Hartford including one new Major Donor. From PDG Prasad Menon's Club, at least four members of the Club had increased their donations so that they received three One Sapphire Pins and one Ruby pin. Finally, a Past President of the Hartford Club, David Daugherty, came from Mansfield, Ohio where he had moved about fifteen years ago. He then became Club Pres. out there and ultimately served as District Governor of D.6600.  He upgraded his giving as well and received a five sapphire pin.

By his request, President Banerjee presented the pins and certificates for the recognitions personally. In addition he inducted new members who were present, again at his request. There were two from the Hartford Club and one from Windsor/Windsor Locks.

The evening ended with many smiles. The foundation is a little richer, membership is increased a little, and the world has another 100 year club.
